Goal Setting and a Clean Eating Challenge!
There's nothing like the beginning of a new year to give you that desire for a fresh start. Whether you're someone who sets goals routinely or not, it's hard not to be motivated when everyone around you is setting goals to better themselves. Research even shows us there are a lot of benefits to goal setting...but it can be tricky. Have you ever known someone who *gasp* didn't achieve their New Year's Resolution?!!??! O.K., so that's most of us. But it doesn't have to be you this year, if you follow some of these handy tips!!
Quick Tips to Remember When Setting a Goal
Set S.M.A.R.T. goals.
Saying "I'm going to make healthier choices this year" is not enough. Be specific. Make them measurable. Attainable. Realistic. And give yourself a time frame - this helps you know when you've reached your goal.
Example: "I will run 3 times a week every week for a month."
Check-in with your goals every month.
Why not use the first of the month to revisit your goals and adjust them as needed? That's 12 fresh starts every year!
The example above is actually my January goal. You may have noticed I didn't indicate how long or how far I would be running. Right now, I just want to get in the habit of doing it. BUT - come February, that's probably not going to be a challenging enough goal for me.I can revisit my goal then and add some time or distance variables. Unless, of course, I'm not reaching my goal, in which case I'll need to do some soul searching & goal re-writing.
Know what personality tendency you have.
Gretchen Rubin has a great little quiz (you can take here) that will tell you which of four personality types you fall into. Just knowing this can help you immensely when setting goals.
For example, "Upholders" are great at following rules. They likely don't need any of these tips because if they set a goal or someone else has a goal for them, they're going to follow it. (Don't we all wish we were them!).
An "Obliger" on the other hand, has trouble following through with goals they've set for themselves, but WILL follow through on commitments made to others. If this is you, consider taking a doing a group challenge or having a work-out partner.
Different tendencies require different goals. "Know thyself." Don't try to fit into someone else's box. Write goals that are going to work for you.
If you are externally motivated and looking for a group challenge to help you reach some nutrition goals, look no further! (*shameless self-promotion ahead!**)

People who have completed this challenge have this to say:
“My favorite thing right now is how my healthy choices are spilling over to my kiddos! Fresh veggies and hummus have become a favorite go to snack and item we include at most meals. Its encouraging to see them reaching for these items instead of me forcing them to eat it! I usually eat a large spinach salad for lunch filled with other veggies and a protein, today my son (3) and daughter (almost 2) asked for a spinach salad, they are currently on their 3rd helping! Love seeing all this goodness going into their tiny bellies! Thanks for the motivation!”
“I really liked this...It definitely motivated me to start making healthy decisions for myself.”
“I thought it was great, very informational. Definitely helped to have meal/snack recipes given because it’s easy to get stuck in a rut and make the same stuff over and over again. Always need new ideas! Good jump start to healthier eating!”
