Do We Need to Detox?

If you're interested in health & wellness at all, you've no doubt noticed the detox trend that's been going around. There are juice fasts, pills to take, wraps to put around your body, things to place on your feet...the list goes on and on.

With so many people out there trying to push their products on you, it can be hard to know what's legit and what's complete bunk. And what about the big question - do we even need to detox?

I'll answer that question in two ways: Should we need to detox? No. We all have this nifty organ, called the liver, that is a super-detox machine. The liver works all day and night, filtering out the yucky stuff you've come into contact with and putting through the proper channels to be eliminated from your body.

Unfortunately, most of us are exposed to so many unhealthy things (chemicals in the air, food, cleaning products and personal care products; excess sugar; medications, etc.) that our poor livers are working overtime. Even if you are a fairly health conscious person, eat organic and minimize your chemical exposure, your liver would probably appreciate a little break.

So do we need to detox? Yes.

Contrary to what some would have you believe, you don't need to go to extreme measures when you do a detox. Just a simple, natural approach is best.

Organic foods, lots and lots of good, clean water, and a little extra rest are rest are all you *need* for a natural detox. You can go the extra mile and do some yoga, sit in a sauna, dry brush or do castor oil packs - but don't make your regime so complicated you don't want to do it.

Avoid things that put an added burden on your body, such as processed foods, high sugar foods, and caffeine. While you're at it, take a look at your household cleaners and personal care products - this may be a good time to switch to "greener" options.

How long and how often should you detox? The choice is ultimately up to you, but a 3-7 day detox is generally sufficient a few times a year. I typically suggest you detox when the seasons change. Spring, in particular is a great time to do some internal spring cleaning.
